High-tech cash boost for Ballina schools

FOUR Ballina schools are set to get a high tech boost with the announcement this week of funding allocations of €5,000 per classroom.

Minister for Labour Affairs and local Fianna Fáil TD Dara Calleary has announced that the schools - St Dymphna’s and St Nicholas’ Special Schools, St Oliver Plunkett NS, The Quay and St Joseph’s NS in Rehins are included in a list of 23 Mayo primary schools that have been allocated funding for high-tech equipment as part of the Government’s efforts to make technology an integral part of the learning process.

Minister Calleary explained that 383 primary schools across the country, in which construction work was completed this year and last year, will each get €5,000 per classroom to buy computer hardware, software and digital equipment.

St Dymphna’s and St Nicholas’ have been allocated €15,500 each to equip their classrooms while St Oliver Plunkett’s NS is to get €10,000, and the sum of €5,000 has been allocated to St Joseph’s in Rehins.

The National Centre for Technology in Education (NCTE) has advised schools of the appropriate equipment specification which should include a fixed digital projector, a laptop computer and a visualiser, complemented by classroom computers.
