Davitt College hall gets green light
By: Keith Bourke

DAVITT College’s 30-year wait for a sports hall is finally coming to an end. According to Deputy Beverley Flynn, the news was announced by Education Minister Batt O’Keeffe who met a delegation from the Castlebar secondary school in Galway yesterday.

The history of the long-awaited hall has involved disappointment on a number of occasions for staff and pupils. It had previously been announced that funding of €2m was to be allocated for the hall, only for all hopes to be dashed when the money failed to materialise.

All of that is now in the past and yesterday (Monday), Deputy Flynn said the funding was “recognition of the merits of the Davitt College case… even at a time when cutbacks in many projects were under consideration.

The Fianna Fáil TD said she was “delighted for the students, the parents and the staff of the school, as well as the wider community which will benefit from the facility.”

Davitt College principal Ioseph McGowan said he was extremely pleased with the news.
