Cooper slammed over tower stance

RESIDENTS of McHale Road in Castlebar have said broadcaster Matt Cooper should have “done his research” before criticising their stance over the McHale Park media tower.

Speaking during TV3’s recent GAA coverage, the broadcaster claimed the benefits of the development outweighed the residents’ concerns.

The media tower was built one metre higher and three metres wider than the planning permission granted. An appeal over the tower and an inquiry over the floodlights at McHale Park are currently with An Bord Pleanála.

“I know there have been issues with the planning in relation to the media box but, to be honest, is it going to make that much difference if it is a metre or two lower?” Cooper said.

Linda Jensen, of the McHale Road Residents’ Association, said Cooper might feel differently if the development was on his doorstep.

“He’s entitled to his own opinion and if he wants to be seen to condone the total disregard for the planning laws so be it. But would he be of the same opinion that it’s a ‘small price to pay’ if he lived opposite that media tower?

“If he had done his research before making his comments he would have found that it has a lot more to do with just the height and width of the tower,” said Ms Jensen.
