Erris Rib Challenge raises €6k for charity
BY MÁIRE ROWLAND
MEMBERS of the Erris Rib Run Challenge raised a very impressive €6,000 for the RNLI following their trip earlier this summer to the Isle of Man.
All the members express a huge ‘thank you’ for the generous sponsorship they received for the challenge. Following the enormous success of their first charity challenge the group hope there will be another on the horizon.
Aboard three different ribs, 12 members of the Erris Rib Run Challenge completed the lengthy crossing over three days.
Setting off from Strangford Lough, Co Down, the sailors experienced beautiful weather conditions and calm seas from start to finish.
Preparation for the challenge began months in advance of the journey itself.
Amy Veasey, a member of Broadhaven Marine Training, offered her expertise to navigate the best possible route for the ribs to take.
Members of the group freely gave of their time to organise necessary equipment and to ensure the safety of the three ribs taking part, The Aoife Mary, The Macbel and The Wave Sweeper.
The idea came about last October when David Tyrell was inspired by a similar venture undertaken by a club in Kinsale, Co Cork.
Amongst the adventurers was photographer Fergus Sweeney who captured a breathtaking photographic account of the entire journey.
Taking part in the challenge were Pat Cowman, John Cafferkey, David Tyrrell, TJ Lennon, Henry Gaughan, Dave Lenaghan, Paud Kellagher, Martin O’ Toole, Eamon Keane, Shane Cafferkey, Paddy Joe Gibbons and Fergus Sweeney.
