Wait for Belmullet football pitches coming to an end

THE five-year wait for a football field in Belmullet is coming to an end with €500,000 in funding sanctioned last week.

Hopes are high the new facility will be in place for the 2010 Comortas Peil na Gaeltachta with work already underway on two pitches, a stand, and dressing rooms on a 20-acre site at Tallagh.

“It’s a state-of-the-art facility and another plus for Belmullet,” local councillor, Tim Quinn, told the Western People. “There’s so much emphasis nowadays on providing facilities for the youth as a diversion from alcohol and drugs and the pitch will be available to all age groups,” Belmullet GAA has been without playing pitches since vacating the town park to accommodate the building of the civic centre five years ago. The nearest facility available to the footballers of Belmullet was in Drum, three miles from the town centre.

“I hope this funding will finish off the new project,” said Cllr Quinn. “There has always been a great spirit in GAA quarters in Belmullet. There’s a lot of voluntary work involved and because of our location it’s expensive to run a club with large travelling expenses but great credit is due to the volunteers who keep the club going,” This latest chunk of funding, sanctioned by Minister Eamon O’Cuiv TD, is in addition to a previous round of funding for the facility which totalled €240,000.

Mayo County Council also gave the club €65,000 as a goodwill gesture for vacating the three-acre field in Belmullet town centre. Mayo Fianna Fáil TDs Dara Calleary and Beverley Flynn welcomed the funding from the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs Deputy Calleary and Deputy Flynn worked with local Fianna Fáil councillor Tim Quinn to secure the funding and they commended the Belmullet councillor on his dedication to the project.
