MAYO SCHOOLS TO BENEFIT FROM GRANTS
Key building works on schools in Westport will be significantly accelerated after the Minister for Education and Science, Mary Hanafin, announced the devolved grants programme for schools around the country, according to Mayo Fianna Fáil TD, John Carty. Welcoming Minister Hanafin’s announcement, Deputy Carty said he was delighted that 15 high-priority schools in Mayo have been approved for funding of €5.3 million under the devolved grants initiative.
The three Westport schools benefiting under this initiative are, S N Faitche, S N Lainn Cille, and S N Druim Slaod , Baile Cruaich. “Schools which are covered by this scheme will be offered grants of between €275,000 to €820,000 depending on the type of works involved.
The scheme is primarily aimed at schools of up to four teachers where enrolment numbers are stable and aims to address accommodation requirements over the next decade”, said Deputy Carty. He added that responsibility for carrying out works such as extensions and refurbishments has been devolved to school management authorities under the scheme.
“It allows the boards of managements in these schools to quickly proceed with work they themselves feel need to be undertaken. I greatly welcome this independence which allows the schools to take ownership of their own projects. “I have continuously lobbied on behalf of these schools over the past few years and I am very pleased to see grant approval coming their way.
The boards of management in each of these schools will be notified by department officials in the coming days and they will be fully briefed about the grant amount offered to the schools”, concluded Deputy Carty
