Great win for Claremorris Fred Daly Team

Courtesy of another gutsy display, Claremorris Golf Club won the Connacht final of the Fred Daly Trophy in Ballinasloe last Saturday when completing a comprehensive win against the host club in a second leg packed with drama, excitement, and above all, good golf.
The premier competition for junior golf in Ireland, Claremorris led 4/1 after the first leg and looked odds on to take the title even allowing for the fact that they had to travel to Ballinasloe’s home course for the second leg. The young golfers from both teams had to overcome high winds throughout but this failed to prevent them from producing golf of the highest quality.
Claremorris had reached the final after recording tough wins over Rosses Point and Strandhill in the quarter- final and semi final respectively; this stood to them in the final, as they never encountered the same difficulty against their Galway opponents.
Cormac O’Halloran had beaten Shane Kelly in the top match in Claremorris but on this occasion he found the Ballinasloe lad too hot to handle before going down 3/2. He had trailed all through and had reduced the deficit to one hole only to allow Kelly to come back at him again. Kelly eventually won after producing some great golf but O’Halloran fought to the end before going down bravely. Stephen Healy had defeated Liam Coughlan in Claremorris by a 4/2 margin and immediately lost the first hole to a birdie, he then went two down before bravely coming back to draw level midway through the tie. He finished strongly to eventually win 3/2. In fact his win meant that Claremorris had won the tie overall as Robert Hennelly had earlier recorded a mammoth 7/6 win over Damien Burke. John McNicholas in match three was three up with four to play against Rory Dervin and looked odds on to win before being called in. He had easily defeated Dervin by a 7/6 margin the week previously in Claremorris and has played some great golf throughout the competition.
Daniel Roche was narrowly behind against David Duignan before he too was called in. Roche was responsible to a large extent for Claremorris winning the tie against Strandhill as he won a cliff-hanger on the eighteenth green to clinch the match.
Claremorris go on to contest the All Ireland series of the competition in mid August at Dungarvan Golf Club. They don’t know as yet who the winners of the other provinces are but they should travel in confidence regardless of who they come up against. They have created history for the club as the first Claremorris team to win the Fred Daly title. Kevin Roche the junior Captain at Claremorris deserves great credit for having the golfers so well prepared for the competition.
