National Ploughing Championships 2004
The National Ploughing Championships are due to take place at Grangeford, Tullow, Co. Carlow on 28th, 29th and 30th September, 2004.
An estimated 200,000 people are expected to attend this event over its duration. A Garda traffic plan has been drawn up to assist persons attending this event and to minimise traffic delays. The main points of the plan are as follows:
Approach routes: (Please note all routes will have signage in place)
Route A: Approaching from the South and South East via Kilkenny.
This traffic will travel North on the N.9 to Milford Cross. At Milford Cross divert right via Hayes Cross and Ballybar Cross towards the N.80. Divert left on N.80 and travel north towards Carlow Town to Walls Forge. Divert right onto R.725 to Car Parks Nos. 3 and 4.
Buses travelling this route will travel straight across the N.80 and continue on minor road to Rathoe Village. Divert left in Rathoe Village to Bus Park No. 5.
Route B: Approaching from the South East via Wexford, Enniscorthy, Bunclody.
This traffic will travel on the N.80 through Ballon Village to Kilnock Junction (2 miles north of Ballon Village). Divert right onto a minor road through Rathoe Village to Car Parks Nos. 5 and 6.
Route C: Approaching from the South and Mid-West via Abbeyleix.
Approach along the N.8 via Abbeyleix - divert right in Abbeyleix onto the R430 towards Carlow. In Carlow at Castlecomer Roundabout divert left along the Northern Relief Road towards Hacketstown Roundabout. Divert left onto R726 for 4 miles to Car Parks Nos. 1 and 2.
Buses travelling this route will continue past Car Parks Nos. 1 and 2 to Friarstown Cross. Divert right to Bus Park No. 1.
Route D: Approaching from the West, North West, Midlands via Portlaoise.
Divert at Portlaoise onto N.80 towards Carlow via Stradbally. In Carlow at Portlaoise Roundabout divert left onto the Northern Relief Road towards Hacketstown Roundabout. Divert left onto R.726 for 4 miles to Car Parks Nos. 1 and 2.
Buses travelling this route will continue past Car Parks Nos. 1 and 2 to Friarstown Cross. Divert right to Bus Park No. 1.
Route E: Approaching from the Midlands via Edenderry, Monesterevin, Athy.
This traffic will divert left in Athy onto the N.78 towards Dublin. Divert right onto R.418 to Castledermot. At the bottom of Main Street, Castledermot divert left and continue on the R.418 to Killerig Cross. Divert right at Killerig Cross onto R726 to Car Park No. 8.
Route F: Traffic approaching from Dublin and the North East.
Traffic from this direction will travel along the M.7 and divert onto M.9 just after Naas. Travel south towards Castledermot. In Castledermot Village divert left onto R.418 to Killerig Cross. Divert right at Killerig Cross onto R.726 to Car Park No. 8.
Route G: Traffic approaching from Dublin and North East via Blessington.
Traffic from the Dublin using the N.81 travel through Baltinglass. At Bough Cross continue along R.726 to Straboe Cross. From Straboe Cross along minor road to R.418 and follow sign posts to Car Park No. 9.
Route H: Approaching from East Wicklow and North Wexford via Tullow.
Travel through Tullow Town along R.725 to Car Park No. 7.
DETOURS
Detours in operation will be clearly signposted and manned by Garda personnel. Motorists not attending the Ploughing Event are advised to plan alternative routes and avoid the Carlow/Town area for the duration of the Event.
Motorists intending to travel to the American Express Golf Championships in Mount Juliet should be aware of the large volumes of traffic on the approach road to Carlow between 28th and 30th September 2004.
Motorists travelling to the Golf Championships from Dublin will be facilitated through Carlow Town as normal. Traffic to this event through Portlaoise and Athy are advised to divert to Durrow and Castlecomer as appropriate.
Gardaí also wish to advise motorists that parking restrictions will apply in Carlow Town and Tullow Town. These restrictions will be strictly enforced and any illegally parked vehicles are liable to be towed away.
