GAA: Ryan goals make the difference
By Billy Horan
South Mayo U-16 A Football Championship – Semi-Final Kilmaine 2-10, Ballinrobe 1-12
TWO first half goals by Kilmaine’s full forwards Shane Ryan were invaluable contributions to this encounter at Cong on Sunday evening. The football may not have been of the highest standard, but a late Ballinrobe rally led to a very exciting finish. The action was still in the first minute, when Shane Ryan, blocking down a defensive clearance, struck for a goal. Sustained Kilmaine pressure ensued in the wake of the goal, and Ballinrobe trailed by 2-3 to 0-1, at the 15th minute. A centre by the lively Kevin Sheridan was the lead-up to Shane Ryan’s second goal, in the 14th minute, and Ballinrobe’s sole score came from the boot of Sam Burke. Ballinrobe did exert somewhat more pressure in the second quarter, but the interval scorline, 2-6 to 0-5, did not make comforting reading for them. Robert O’Connor was unlucky when his host rebounded off the crossbar in the 20th minute, and Sean Burke constituted the main threat. The early activity after the resumption was marked by a bold Ballinrobe bid to redress their unfavourable position. Points by half-back Raymond McGreal, and Sean Burke (two) boosted expectations and a goal loomed in the 35th minute when the upright frustrated Conor Keane’s shot. Padraig O’Dea eased the strain momentarily on Kilmaine by kicking a point from the right corner in the 40th minute, and the score Ballinrobe had been striving for materialised in the 43rd minute, in the shape of a John Sweeney goal, emanating from a long range free by Sean Burke. Sean Burke pointed a 45 metres kick four minutes later, and the Kilmaine advantage had dwindled to the minimum, 2-7 to 1-9.
Stephen Mullin countered with a splendid point from the right wing for Kilmaine, and though John Sweeney quickly negated the score, a brace of points by Shane Ryan and Kevin Sheridan put Kilmaine ahead by 2-10 to 1-10 with approximately eight minutes to go. Renewed Ballinrobe pressure yielded points by John Sweeney and Sean Burke (free) and a combination of vigilant Kilmaine defending and wayward Ballinrobe finishing ensured no other scores were forthcoming. Padraig O’Dea, Shane Ryan, Kevin Sheridan, Malcolm O’Malley, Francis Burke, Brian Mullin, and Joe O’Brien performed with distinction for Kilmaine. Sean Burke, Donal Vaughan, John Sweeney, Diarmuid Finnerty, after a shaky start, Raymond McGreal, and Jimmy Sweeney figured prominently for Ballinrobe.
