Run ‘The Fields of Athenry’ this Christmas
By Cróna Esler

Over-indulgence and Christmas seem to go hand-in hand when it comes to the festive season and each year we invariably resolve to work-off all the bad food in the New Year. This Christmas, why not keep your promise and take part in the ‘Fields of Athenry 10K Run’ on Stephen’s Day?
On Monday December 26, Athenry is definitely the place to be, inviting the people of the West to step away from their firesides and get the chance to sample the fun and fresh air by taking part in the run.
The event has now been in place for a number of years and the atmosphere is guaranteed to be buzzing as locals, who always turn out in huge numbers, line the route and encourage the participants on their track.
Hosted by Athenry AC and sponsored by Proactive Design and Marketing, this Fun
Run and Walk on December 26 starts at 11am and is open to all ages. The race is growing in popularity every year and in 2004, almost 200 runners and walkers worked off some of the seasonal excesses around the beautiful surrounding countryside.
Speaking in the run up to this year’s event, Race Director Mick Rice commented that the organisers look forward to hosting the race from year to year and enjoy welcoming runners and walkers from all over the county and further a field. “The event offers the opportunity to take part in a well-organised and enjoyable race,” he stated.
Continuing, Mr Rice remarked that although a number of the country’s best runners are scheduled to participate this year, the race is open to all levels of ability and fitness. “Local runner Paul McNamara looks sure to be favourite to defend his title which he won for the second time last year,” said the Race Director.
Athenry AC are asking that runners or walkers enter as early as possible to avoid registration delays on the day of the race. The race starts and finishes at St Mary’s GAA clubhouse in Athenry, where there is ample parking and changing facilities. Registration is at 9.30am on race morning. Entry forms can be accessed on the web at www.fieldsofathenry.org, by email from mickricenet@netscape.net or by calling race director Mick Rice at 087-2896989. The entry fee is €15.
