Cheeky Westport boys are 2005 calendar pin-ups
By: Majella Loftus
Twelve handsome lads from Westport have kindly posed nude all in the name of charity!. The locals literally bared all for a ‘Cheeky’ calendar and appear in different locations around the West Mayo town for each month of next year. A number of cancer care services at Mayo General Hospital are to benefit from the new calendar which features four different pictures of the locals for each month. The calendar was the brainchild of Ann Feehan and Elaine Fanning who are colleagues in Allergan Pharmaceuticals in Westport. Anne explained in March of last year, Elaine from Co. Cavan had been in hospital six months previously. She was very pleased with the way they had treated her and especially Dr Barry. “When she came out she thought she would like to do something for the hospital. The film ‘Calendar Girls’ had just been released and I was doing some raffles for charities at work. Elaine then came up with the idea of doing ‘Calendar Boys’. I told her if she could get the boys to pose, I would get the money together for the printing.” The two girls came up with the theme that each of the boys would be doing normal every day things but minus one vital item. “The idea of the calendar is the boys got up and forgot to get dressed. They went shopping, they went to work, to got their hair done, they went to the beach. They did everything but forgot their clothes!.” With the idea firmly in train, the girls then spoke to Pat Treacy and Austin Creaven of Handeye studios who were very enthusiastic and agreed to design the calendar and take all the pictures. “Once Elaine convinced her own boyfriend Peter Gibbons to agree to be photographed, she got eleven more to agree,” added Ann.
Sponsors such as Allergan, Nomadic Structures, Carraig Donn, Westport House Estate, Tony Scott Plumbing, Talking Heads Hair Studio, Beauty By Rose, Ballina Beverages, Hand Eye Studios and Cashin Printing came on board and in September/October of this year they started taking pictures. “They began with Mr July who is my son! They had to spent two hours with each of the lads and sometimes even longer,” said Ann. She added she was very grateful for each of the premises who allowed the photos to be taken on their premises and also who helped saved the blushes of each of the lads. ‘Cheeky Covie Friends’ of Cancer Care Services in Mayo was set in motion and the money raised will be divided equally between the Oncology Unit at MGH, the Mayo/Roscommon Hospice and the Mayo Cancer Support Association. 2,000 copies have been printed and are on sale for €10 each. The group are hoping to make the full €20,000. Ann said they are hoping people in Mayo will also send them abroad and that they will have orders from all over. They are also on sale in McLoughlins Bookshop in Westport, Blousers Pub, The Jester and The West pubs and through Ann Feehan on 098-55268 (work) and 098-27233 (home). The models are Derek Morrin, Paul O’Rourke, John Duffy, Gavin Joyce, Peter Gibbons, Finbar O’Neill, Seamus Feehan, Dave Duffy, Conor O’Neill, Brian Durcan, Kevin Cusack and Jeff Moran.
