Shut down for Mayo Community TV
By Cróna Esler

AFTER more than 30 years providing a vital service to local homes, Mayo Community Television Ltd is to cease transmission from May 1 next. Established in 1979 by Padraig Cunnane of Balla, the company has been operating at a loss for the last number of years to accommodate its loyal customers, and it was with a heavy heart that Mr Cunnane pulled the plug.

Mr Cunnane told the Western Peoplehe was proud of what the company had achieved but knew the time had come.

"We maintained the service at a loss for the last two years but there comes a time when you need to cut your losses and move on. One way or another, the service would have been terminated in accordance with the European directive but we wanted to keep the service going for as long as we could," explained the company secretary.

"We wish to thank sincerely all who supported the service down the years and especially the minority who remained loyal to the end. At present, for many reasons, only a small and dwindling number of people have continued to support the system but we wanted to continue as long as we could, particularly for the older people who rely on the service," he continued.

Mr Cunnane said the people who still depend on the service for cross-channel television and on their aerials for Irish television will need to contact their local television dealers or aerial/satellite dish suppliers for advice on the best means of continued access to the Irish and British channels.

"We regret the inconvenience this will cause but, after over 30 years providing the multi-channel service, technology has moved on and we must move with it. Ours is an analogue service and would have to cease in the autumn in any case, when all analogue services in Europe must close and digital transmissions will take over."
