SIR – In the letters page of last week’s Western People we had a missive from one Paul Lynch on the jailing of Pat O’Donnell, with the heading ‘Pat O’Donnell is conveniently stuck in jail’, in which Mr Lynch alleges that the jailing of O’Donnell may be to facilitate further work by Shell.

SIR - The recent television programme featuring DJ Chris Moyles’ return to his roots in Ballina was a fascinating and depressing reminder of a dark period in Ireland’s history. Seeing how the Famine touched the very streets I grew up in was chilling in the extreme and deeply upsetting.

SIR - Off we set to start our summer holiday in England looking forward to our break with the children in Butlins. We decided to take the car on the boat trip this year for many reasons - the main one being the cost of booking a flight with baggage charges, etc.
