They ended the weekend practically as well placed as they began it, still fourth in the league table and still four points better off in the scoring averages than Donegal, the next team below them. But none of that disguised the shortcomings of Mayo’s latest league outing.
Okay, the primary concern at present is not the chasing of a National League semi-final appearance, so that a gap of four points has opened up between Mayo and the top three teams is not of critical importance. But back to back defeats in matches that they held second half leads and, as was the case on Saturday, against an opposition that played with only 14 men for half an hour, might just have knocked some of the confidence from last year’s All-Ireland finalists.
