American architect and philosopher Travis Price will be giving a lecture about his work in Ireland and internationally on Sunday, February 10 at 7.30 pm in the Wyatt Hotel, Westport.

Travis is no stranger to Mayo having designed and constructed, with his students, five ‘Spirit of Place’ Architectural Installations in north Mayo.

This will be a lecture of interest not just to architects, but also to artists, creative thinkers, and those interested in heritage, history, archaeology and the environment.

In his three decades as an architect, author, educator, and philosopher Travis Price has developed a modern architecture informed by ecology and mythology that restores the spirit of place to modern design..

Price’s works and insights into our collective past offer an inspired and redefined view of the heritage and potential of emerging architecture. His award winning book, “The Archaeology of Tomorrow – Architecture and the Spirit of Place”, follows Price’s quest for the mythic modern while offering inspiration for a reinvigorated architecture of the 21st Century.

Price’s vision is grounded in real-life success for over 30 years with large-scale award winning private and public works, including the world’s largest solar building. He has planned new town developments, designed an array of stunning individual residences, commercial properties, and institutional monuments.

Eighteen years ago, he launched the ongoing Spirit of Place/Spirit of Design (SPSD) design/build, educational exploration program at the Catholic University of America in Washington DC, to provide architecture students with the opportunity to research, design, and construct a project in nine days in a remote landscape.

This summer Travis and his team of both American and Irish architectural students will be constructing his next Spirit of Place Installation in Mayo. This will be located on the island of InishTurk in commemoration of the ‘The Gathering’ of 2013, representing those that have left the island, and Ireland generally, and those that returned for ‘The Gathering’.

The lecture is sponsored by Mayo County Council and the DOELG Government Policy on Architecture and forms part of the Mayo Gathering Celebrations 2013.
